My doctoral research centers on the role history has in Norwegian black metal. As an extreme form of music that carries a stong antisocial sentiment black metal's role as a major cultural product in Norway seems strange. However, it is possible to see that Norwegian black metal reflects many of the symbols and sentiments that can be found throughout the development of Norwegian identity. As a result, placing Norwegian black metal and its uses of history in context with the creation and negotiation of a distinct Norwegian identity can enable a better understanding of how black metal has become an important cultural product.
